Who is Dr. Peter T. Phan?
I am a New Jersey boy who moved here to attend Tufts University School of Dental Medicine after receiving my Cell Biology & Neuroscience and Economics degrees from Rutgers University. I completed my dental school education in 2007, orthodontic training at Tufts University Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics in 2011, and became a Board Certified Orthodontist (formerly known as Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics) in 2013. Early in my career, I was invited back to Tufts to serve as part-time faculty, but gave up teaching as private practice and life consumed most of my free time.
When most people think about braces or aligners, they picture aesthetics — a straighter smile and greater confidence. But for me, orthodontics has never been just about appearances. It’s about function, balance, oral health, and the subtle ways alignment shapes someone’s daily life. I often describe orthodontics as a puzzle. Every patient presents a unique combination of biology, dental physics, and personal goals. There is rarely only one solution. My role is to study the landscape and design the best path forward for that individual.
I keep myself at the forefront of the profession with extra continuing education courses, involvement with an amazing study club focused on orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, implementing the appropriate technologies into my practice, and surrounding myself with the best staff in the field. This has allowed me to offer traditional braces, lingual braces with InSmile, clear aligners like Invisalign, early orthodontic treatment (Phase I), jaw surgery (also known as orthognathic surgery), airway focused orthodontics, minipin assisted orthodontics, and TMJ therapy.
After graduating residency, I wanted to build something rooted in community. I was drawn to the South Shore because of its family-oriented character and strong sense of connection. There is pride here - in homes, schools, and traditions - and I believe healthcare should reflect that same passion. It's why we chose to raise our family here on the Massachusetts South Shore, and my dog/beach/travel/food loving wife, two daughters, and I are so grateful for calling the South Shore home.
